The New York Rangers are about to say goodbye to a legend behind the mask—not a player, but the man who shaped them. After more than two decades of molding some of the NHL's finest goaltenders, Benoit Allaire has announced he will retire following the 2026 NHL Draft and free agency period.

Allaire first joined the Rangers as goaltending coach in 2004, a role he held with distinction until 2024, when he transitioned to director of goaltending. His quiet, meticulous approach turned the Blueshirts' crease into a fortress. When Allaire stepped into his new role, Jeff Malcolm took over the day-to-day coaching duties, keeping the legacy alive.

“Benoit Allaire’s contributions to the Rangers over the past two decades have been immeasurable,” general manager Chris Drury said in a statement. “Whether it was teaching a Hall of Famer or a rookie just starting his career, Benny made everyone he worked with better. On behalf of everyone in the Rangers organization, we wish him and his wife, Lyne, all the best in retirement.”

Allaire’s fingerprints are all over some of the greatest goaltending performances in Rangers history. He was the driving force behind Henrik Lundqvist’s rise to Hall of Fame status, refining the King's technique and mental game from day one. More recently, he helped Igor Shesterkin develop into a Vezina Trophy winner and one of the league's most dominant netminders. The bond Allaire built with both goalies went far beyond drills—it was built on trust, patience, and an unyielding commitment to excellence.

As the Rangers look ahead to the 2026-27 season, they'll do so without the man who quietly shaped their most important position. For fans who remember the King's glove saves and Shesterkin's acrobatic stops, Allaire's influence is woven into every highlight. His retirement marks the end of an era—one defined by steady hands, sharp eyes, and an unmatched ability to turn good goalies into great ones.
