The Cincinnati Bengals made headlines this offseason with a flurry of moves, but it turns out their biggest swing might have been the one that didn't happen. According to a recent report from The Athletic, the Bengals were actively in the mix to trade for Las Vegas Raiders star pass rusher Maxx Crosby—a five-time Pro Bowler and one of the most disruptive defenders in the NFL.
Crosby, who signed a massive $106 million contract extension with the Raiders, is the kind of game-wrecker every team covets. Known for his relentless motor and ability to combine upper-body power with polished technique, the Eastern Michigan product has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Last season alone, he racked up 73 tackles, 10 sacks, and two forced forced fumbles in 15 games—and he's only missed seven games in his entire career.
So why didn't the Bengals pull the trigger? The trade talks ultimately fizzled when the Raiders shifted gears. Crosby was reportedly headed to the Baltimore Ravens in a blockbuster deal, but Baltimore rescinded the trade due to health concerns. It's a move that likely gave Cincinnati pause as well—taking a gamble on a star whose medicals aren't squeaky clean is a risky proposition, even for a player of Crosby's caliber.
Instead, the Bengals pivoted to a different strategy. They signed free agent Boye Mafe, who just won a Super Bowl with the Seattle Seahawks and, according to Next Gen Stats, posted a higher pressure rate than any other current Bengals defender with at least 150 pass rushes last season. They also added Bryan Cook and Jonathan Allen in the first wave of free agency, committing a combined eight years and $126 million to those three players.
Still, the door might not be completely closed on a Crosby trade. If Cincinnati feels confident about his health later in the season, they could re-enter the conversation. For now, Bengals fans can take comfort knowing their front office is thinking big—and that their pass rush is already looking much stronger than last year's lackluster unit.
