Ben Shelton's powerful singles game has been turning heads on the ATP Tour, but last week in Houston, he showcased a different kind of chemistry. Teaming up with his former University of Florida doubles partner, Andres Andrade, Shelton added a new title to his resume: ATP doubles champion.
The duo triumphed at the Fayez Sarofim & Co. U.S. Men's Clay Court Championship, the tour's only American clay-court event. In a thrilling final, they battled back to defeat the top-seeded team of Orlando Luz and Rafael Matos 4-6, 6-3, 10-6, claiming the first ATP doubles title for both players.
The victory was a full-circle moment for the former Gators, who last played together collegiately in 2021. Shelton humorously acknowledged their growth, joking, "I'd say we're a lot better at doubles together now than we were when we got kicked off the lineup while playing together at the University of Florida."
After dropping a tight first set where they squandered five break points, Shelton and Andrade found their rhythm. They dominated the second set to force a match tie-break, where their aggressive net play and seamless communication saw them race to a 5-2 lead before closing out the championship.
True to tennis tradition for the Houston event, the champions celebrated their hard-fought win with a victorious leap into the River Oaks Country Club pool, capping off a perfect reunion on the clay.
