Northamptonshire finally broke their County Championship duck in emphatic fashion, thanks to a vintage display from seamer Ben Sanderson that left Worcestershire shell-shocked at Wantage Road. The veteran paceman ripped through the Pears' batting order with a devastating spell of six wickets in just 29 balls, finishing with match figures of seven for 31 as the visitors crumbled from 88 for two to 114 all out. That collapse sealed an innings-and-177-run victory for Northants, their first win of the Rothesay County Championship season.
The hosts had earlier laid the platform for victory with a commanding batting performance. James Sales and Lewis McManus both notched centuries in a superb 192-run partnership, powering Northamptonshire to a declaration at 597 for seven. Sanderson then took center stage, delivering a masterclass in seam bowling that proved too much for Worcestershire's lineup.
Elsewhere in Division Two, Kent's Chris Benjamin lit up Canterbury with a brilliant 123, sharing a pivotal partnership of 184 with Joey Evison to steer the hosts to 335 in their second innings. That left Derbyshire facing a daunting target of 364 for victory, though they stumbled to 19 for one at stumps. Quick bowler Rory Haydon was the star for Derbyshire earlier, claiming five for 81 to complete match figures of 10 for 163, but his efforts may not be enough to save his side.
At Lord's, Durham's Emilio Gay and David Bedingham both struck centuries to give their side a commanding first-innings lead of 100 heading into the final day against Middlesex. Gay's 129 was particularly timely, coming at the venue for next month's first Test against New Zealand, and will surely boost his England selection hopes. Bedingham added 147 as Durham closed on 530 for eight, putting them in a strong position to push for victory.
In Division One, Leicestershire face an uphill battle to avoid defeat against Nottinghamshire at Grace Road. The Foxes were bowled out for 308 in their first innings, despite a fine hundred from Stevie Eskinazi, in reply to Nottinghamshire's 490. They then reached 215 for seven in their second innings—a lead of just 33—thanks to contributions from Jonny Tattersall (61) and Ben Green (81). Olly Stone was the destroyer-in-chief for Notts, adding three for 34 to his first-innings five for 68, leaving his side firmly on course for a second win of the season.
Finally, teenage debutant Adam Thomas stole the headlines at the Kia Oval, scoring a century on his Championship debut as Surrey piled up 622 against Sussex. Dom Sibley strengthened his case for an England Test recall with a magnificent 187, taking his season tally to 376 runs at an average of 62.66, before 19-year-old Thomas celebrated his milestone with 120. Sussex were left reeling at 76 for four in reply, still 188 runs behind, with Matt Fisher striking twice in the first over to leave Surrey eyeing their first win of the season on the final day.
