Coach Ben McCollum has signed a contract extension through 2032 after leading Iowa to its first Elite Eight appearance in 39 years, the school announced Monday. The Hawkeyes were 24-13 overall and 10-10 in the Big Ten Conference in McCollum's first season. Iowa defeated three higher-seeded teams in the NCAA Tournament in Clemson, defending national champion Florida and Nebraska.

In a move that solidifies a bright future for Hawkeye basketball, the University of Iowa announced Monday that head coach Ben McCollum has signed a contract extension through 2032. The decision comes on the heels of a historic season that saw Iowa reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1987—a 39-year drought that McCollum shattered in his very first year at the helm.

The Hawkeyes finished the season with a 24-13 overall record and a 10-10 mark in the competitive Big Ten Conference. But it was their NCAA Tournament run that truly turned heads. Iowa knocked off three higher-seeded opponents—Clemson, defending national champion Florida, and Nebraska—before falling to Illinois 71-59 in the regional final in Houston. It was a March Madness journey that captured the imagination of Hawkeye Nation and put the program back on the national map.

"This extension reflects not only our recent success, but the strong alignment we have with Coach McCollum's vision for Iowa basketball," said athletic director Beth Goetz. "The culture he and his staff have developed, the way they represent our institution, and the connection created with the Hawkeye community have been incredibly meaningful."

McCollum's debut season was nothing short of remarkable. He joined legendary coach Tom Davis as the only first-year men's basketball coach in program history to win at least 20 games and advance to the Elite Eight. The 24 wins also tied for the fifth-most in a single season at Iowa, a testament to the immediate impact McCollum has had.

The coach's rapid rise through the ranks is a story in itself. After spending 15 successful years at Division II Northwest Missouri State, McCollum moved to Drake for the 2024-25 season. Just one year later, he took the reins at Iowa. In just two Division I seasons, he has amassed a 55-17 record and four NCAA Tournament wins across two appearances—a pace that few can match.

"We have a strong foundation in place, and we have great momentum moving forward," McCollum said. "We are eager to build on our success and elevate this program at the highest level."

For Hawkeye fans, the future has never looked brighter—and with McCollum locked in through 2032, the foundation for sustained success is firmly in place. Whether you're repping your Iowa gear on game day or just love a good Cinderella story, this is a program on the rise.
