The W.F. West High School softball team is on fire, and they showed no signs of cooling off Friday afternoon with a commanding 5-0 shutout over Black Hills. The win marks the Bearcats' ninth straight victory, completing a season sweep of the Wolves and solidifying their two-game lead atop the EvCo standings.
Junior pitcher Taylor Tobin was the star of the show, delivering a masterful complete game on just 81 pitches. She allowed only two hits, walked two, and fanned 11 batters—a stark contrast to her recent outings where pitch counts soared into triple digits. Tobin also helped her own cause at the plate, lacing a two-out, two-run single in the top of the second inning to give W.F. West an early lead they would never relinquish.
The Bearcats (15-2, 11-1 EvCo) capitalized on timely hitting, with most of their runs coming with two outs. Karlee Coleman was a force at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Rayah Middleton added a double, two RBIs, and a run, while Gracie Elam and Avery Osborn each contributed key hits to keep the offense rolling.
Head coach Kevin Zylstra praised his team's relentless approach. "It boils down to confidence," he said. "Doesn't matter who it is, they all can step in and do it." With Aberdeen dropping a game to Tumwater, the Bearcats now control their own destiny in the league title race. "Pedal to the metal," Zylstra added. "We can't afford to give that game back."
Next up for W.F. West is a crucial third matchup against Tumwater on Monday in Thurston County. A win would put them just one step closer to wrapping up the regular season league crown—and keep their championship dreams alive.
