Shreyas Iyer has been handed a ₹12 lakh fine after his team’s slow over-rate during Punjab Kings’ victory over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026. This is Iyer’s first over-rate penalty of the season, but it comes after a history of time-management issues last year that cost him a total of ₹36 lakh in fines.

The BCCI takes match pacing seriously. Under Article 2.22 of the Code of Conduct, teams must bowl their full 20 overs within 90 minutes. That means each side needs to get through at least 14.1 overs per hour, including the two 150-second strategic time-outs. The goal is simple: keep matches from dragging late into the night and protect the broadcast window.

For a first offense, the captain pays a standard monetary fine. If the problem persists, penalties escalate—not just for the skipper, but potentially for the entire playing XI. A 25% fine also brings one demerit point. Repeat offenders accumulate more points, which stay on the record for 36 months before being cleared.

Players can appeal Level 2 or Level 3 violations to the BCCI ombudsman, but it comes with a steep ₹90 lakh (approx. USD 104,000) appeal fee. So far, most captains have chosen to pay up and move on.

Iyer’s latest penalty came despite a gritty middle-order recovery that secured two crucial points for Punjab Kings. The on-field result was positive, but the administrative fallout was immediate—he simply couldn’t keep his team on pace within the 90-minute limit.

For IPL fans watching at home, the over-rate rule is about keeping the action crisp and predictable. For captains, it’s a constant balancing act between tactical bowling changes and the ticking clock. As the season heats up, expect more fines—and more pressure on skippers to keep things moving.
