LOYSBURG — The District 5 Class 2A track and field championships delivered thrilling performances on Wednesday, May 13, at Northern Bedford County High School, with Somerset County athletes shining brightest on the big stage.

In a display of pure dominance, North Star senior Baylee Sleek soared to her third consecutive girls high jump title, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches. Competing through a co-op with Conemaugh Township, Sleek is no stranger to pressure—she’s the defending PIAA 2A champion and now heads to Shippensburg with her sights set on another gold medal.

"It felt very good to win districts again and head to states, especially my senior year," Sleek said. "The meets and invitationals have prepared me for districts and states. I've learned my rhythm, and I've been working on getting my steps down perfect."

But Sleek isn't the only star in her family. Her freshman sister, Braxtyn, stole the spotlight in the girls 300-meter hurdles, blazing to a personal-best 49.22 seconds to claim first place. The younger Sleek was visibly thrilled by the achievement, especially sharing the moment with her sister.

"This is amazing. I wasn't expecting it," Braxtyn Sleek said. "I am glad I am going to states. I give all the glory to God. Being able to go to states as a freshman and experience this with my sister is very cool. I am excited. Everyone cheering me on in my race was amazing."

Meanwhile, in the girls pole vault, Windber's Pacey Oyler continued her ascent. After tying for first last season, the sophomore cleared 10 feet to claim the gold outright and secure her spot at Shippensburg.

"I wish I would have jumped 10-6, but this still feels pretty good to win it," Oyler said. "I am hoping to clear 10-6 or 11 feet at states. I am very excited to go to states."

Oyler's senior sister, Mayson, also contributed to the family legacy as a member of the victorious 3200-meter relay team. With a mix of seasoned champions and rising stars, Somerset County is proving that small-town athletes can compete with the best—and they're just getting started.
