In a bittersweet evening that marked the end of an era, Bayern Munich delivered a commanding performance to spoil Alexandra Popp's farewell match, defeating VfL Wolfsburg 4-0 to retain the women's German Cup on Thursday.
The iconic Popp, who has been the heart and soul of Wolfsburg for 14 years, was bidding adieu before her move to Borussia Dortmund. But her hopes of securing a 14th Cup title—her 12th with the club—were dashed by a relentless Bayern side that found its stride in the second half.
The match started as a tightly contested affair, but Bayern broke the deadlock just before halftime. A penalty was awarded after Lineth Beerensteyn fouled Momoko Tanikawa, and Georgia Stanway coolly converted from the spot to give the Bavarians a 1-0 lead.
Bayern nearly doubled their advantage before the break, but Pernille Harder's effort was heroically cleared off the line by Sarai Linder. However, Harder wouldn't be denied for long. In the 59th minute, she outjumped Janina Minge to head home Magdalena Eriksson's cross, putting Bayern firmly in control.
Tanikawa effectively sealed the victory in the 77th minute, and Arianna Caruso added the finishing touch in the 84th, capping a dominant display that left Wolfsburg shell-shocked.
"We deserved to win today. We were very dominant in the second half, and we certainly deserved it based on our performance throughout the season," said Bayern midfielder Linda Dallmann. "I'm proud of the team, everyone brought their best today."
For Popp, who played the full 90 minutes, the defeat was an emotional end to her storied tenure at Wolfsburg. Tears flowed as the final whistle blew, marking the departure of a player who has defined the club's identity with her genuine nature and charisma.
"It's hard to find the right words," said teammate Sophia Klein. "But we can be proud. Of course it hurts, we would have liked to have taken something but I'm still proud."
As Wolfsburg says goodbye to its icon, Bayern celebrates a double triumph, having also claimed the Bundesliga title this season. For fans of the game, it's a reminder that even in farewell, the beautiful game never stops delivering drama.
