Something clicked for Ty Arafet in the fourth inning Saturday night, and the Montverde batters never stood a chance. The towering 6-foot-7 right-hander found a second wind, reared back, and started firing strikes with the kind of electric energy that can change a game in an instant.
That spark came thanks to a 3-0 cushion, built on a home run from Kinon Bastian, a wild pitch, and an RBI double by Xavier Johnson in the third inning. With that lead, Arafet settled into a groove, relying on his powerful arm to keep Montverde off balance. The First Academy went on to win 4-1, completing a two-game sweep in their best-of-three Class 2A, Region 2 semifinal series. Next up: a region final showdown with Lakeland Christian.
For Arafet, this win carried extra weight. Last year, in the same round of the playoffs, he suffered a blown-out arm that required Tommy John surgery, forcing him to watch from the sidelines as his teammates captured the Class 2A state title. "It felt amazing, man," Arafet said. "I'm just grateful for being able to pitch the last four years at TFA. It was a full-circle moment to come out here and pitch tonight."
Now, with his arm healthy and his confidence soaring, Arafet is right back in the mix, helping his team chase a repeat championship. "No pressure. That's just the expectations," he said. "There's no doubt we're gonna go do it."
Arafet struck out seven batters, including three straight in the fourth inning, before handing the ball to Josh Garcia in the sixth. Garcia was lights out, fanning four hitters over two innings to secure the save. Jaxon Wells added an insurance run with an RBI double in the fifth.
TFA coach Alan Kunkel couldn't hide his pride in his ace. "Ty is such a competitor, man," Kunkel said. "He threw against Montverde in the district championship game and struggled with his command. He's coming off surgery, but his arm strength is great, and the command has been getting better each time out. Tonight, he had that splitter as a weapon, and he was able to use it to keep them guessing."
With Arafet firing on all cylinders and the Royals playing with the poise of defending champions, this team looks ready to make another deep postseason run. For fans of the game, it's the kind of story that reminds you why baseball in May is so special—and why the right gear, from cleats to caps, can make all the difference when you're chasing a title.
