Barcelona's summer shopping list is ambitious, but their budget might not be able to keep up. The Catalan giants are planning to bring in two new forwards—a left winger and a striker—to prepare for the likely departure of veteran Robert Lewandowski. On top of that, they're also in the market for a center-back, making this a crucial transfer window for the club.
Sporting director Deco has been busy scouting options, and one name that's caught the club's eye is Newcastle United's Anthony Gordon. The 23-year-old England international is seen as a younger, more dynamic alternative to current winger Raphinha. In fact, Gordon's potential is so highly rated that he's reportedly preferred over Marcus Rashford, who's currently on loan at the club.
But here's the catch: Newcastle United isn't letting Gordon go cheaply. The Magpies are demanding at least €75 million for the star, a fee that has quickly taken Barcelona out of the running. According to journalist Christian Falk, the Premier League club's financial stance has effectively ended the Blaugrana's pursuit. "It could be true that Barcelona would like to sign Anthony Gordon," Falk noted. "The agents are making a lot of calls—meetings with Chelsea, contact with Liverpool, contact with Arsenal—but Newcastle need the money this summer for Financial Fair Play. Barcelona were offered the player, but they can't afford the kind of transfer fee we've been talking about."
With left wing being a key position to fill—especially if Rashford doesn't stay—Barcelona will need to pivot quickly. Spending €75 million on Gordon is simply not feasible when the club also needs to invest heavily in a new center-back and striker. Instead, Deco should focus on more affordable alternatives like Ez Abde and Jan Virgili, who could provide the same attacking spark without breaking the bank. After all, in the high-stakes world of transfers, knowing when to walk away is just as important as knowing when to make a move.
