Ball State men's volleyball's run ends in Final Four loss to UC Irvine

The Cardinals were denied a trip to the national championship game once again, with a pivotal point in the third set.

The Ball State Cardinals' remarkable season came to a heartbreaking end Saturday night, as their quest for a national championship fell short once again in a four-set semifinal loss to UC Irvine at Pauley Pavilion. Despite entering the match as one of the final four teams standing for the 17th time in program history, the No. 4-seeded Cardinals couldn't overcome a pivotal turning point in the third set, finishing their season with an impressive 26-5 record.

The match started ominously for Ball State, as the team that led the nation in hitting percentage all season struggled to find its rhythm. The Cardinals managed just a .114 attack in the first set, allowing UC Irvine to methodically build a lead and take the frame 25-19. It was a rare off-night for a squad that had dominated opponents with their offensive efficiency throughout the year.

But true to form, Ball State bounced back in the second set. Led by MIVA Player of the Year Patrick Rogers, the Cardinals rediscovered their groove, hitting an impressive .387 as a team. They seized control midway through the set and held off a late rally from the Anteaters, with Will Patterson delivering a clutch kill to seal the 25-23 win and even the match at one set apiece.

The third set was where the drama truly unfolded. In a back-and-forth battle that saw eight ties, including at 23, 24, and 25, the Cardinals appeared poised to take a commanding 2-1 lead. Ball State held a 25-24 advantage and was just one point away from winning the set when a costly foot fault on Rogers' serve shifted the momentum. An attacking error followed, giving UC Irvine a 26-25 lead before Andrej Jokanovic slammed home the decisive point to win 27-25.

That momentum carried into the fourth set, where the Cardinals never led after scoring the opening point. Ball State managed to tie the score at 11-11, but UC Irvine responded with a decisive 14-8 run to close out the match and end the Cardinals' championship dreams.

UC Irvine's offense was firing on all cylinders, posting a .362 hitting percentage as a team. Jokanovic led the charge with 19 kills, while Trevor Clark (14), Andreas Brinck (13), and William D'Arcy (12) provided ample support. Setter Cameron Kosty orchestrated the attack with 53 assists as the Anteaters advanced to their fifth national title game in program history, where they hold a perfect 4-0 record.

For Ball State, Rogers was the lone bright spot offensively, but the Cardinals will look back on a season defined by resilience and excellence. While the ending wasn't what they hoped for, this team's journey to the Final Four—especially after navigating an abrupt coaching change—will be remembered as one of the program's finest campaigns.
