With just 100 days to go until the Birmingham 2026 European Athletics Championships, the official mascot has been unveiled—and it's a bull with a big personality. Meet Bab the Bull, a spirited symbol of determination, strength, and tenacity that organizers hope will rally fans and athletes alike.
The bull holds deep roots in Birmingham's history, with connections to the city stretching back to the 16th century. Jim Gilbert, head of creative at Birmingham 2026, explained that the mascot was chosen to reflect the city's enduring resilience and power. "Bab represents the fighting spirit of Birmingham and the athletes who will compete here," he said.
The championships, set to take place from August 10 to 16, will bring together Europe's top track and field stars. Adding to the excitement, Iwan Thomas—a decorated European, Commonwealth, and World Championships medalist—had this to say about Bab: "Don't let the friendly face fool you—Bab's got a mischievous streak."
Bab won't just be a mascot for the games; he's already getting into the action. This Sunday, he'll join Thomas as an official starter for the Great Birmingham Run 10k, giving fans a first taste of the energy and excitement heading into the championships.
