It was a tough week for German football as the Bundesliga's European hopes took a hit. Both FC Bayern Munich and SC Freiburg suffered narrow one-goal defeats in the first legs of their respective semifinals—away from home in Paris and Braga. While the results were disappointing, there's still plenty of reason for optimism. With the second legs set to be played in front of their home crowds, both clubs have a golden opportunity to turn the tide and book their spots in the finals.

However, the bigger picture is a bit more concerning. The Bundesliga's quest for a fifth Champions League spot in next season's competition has become an uphill battle. Spain's La Liga clubs fared much better this week, with Atlético Madrid securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Arsenal in the Champions League, and Rayo Vallecano edging out RC Strasbourg 1-0 in the UEFA Conference League. Those results have allowed Spain to extend its lead over Germany in the UEFA season rankings, with the gap now sitting at 0.567 points—roughly the equivalent of two wins.

But all hope is not lost. If Bayern and Freiburg can advance to their respective finals, they could still swing the rankings back in Germany's favor—especially if Atlético and Rayo stumble in their second-leg matches. The key advantage? Unlike the German sides, the Spanish teams will be playing away from home next week. That puts the Bundesliga clubs in the driver's seat for a dramatic comeback, both on the pitch and in the race for that coveted fifth Champions League spot. For now, though, the Iberians hold the edge.
