The Auburn Tigers are locked in a heated recruiting battle with some of college football's biggest names—including College Football Playoff contenders—for one of the top defensive backs in the 2027 class. Four-star safety Davion Jones, a standout from Cornelius, North Carolina, has narrowed his list to five schools, and Auburn has made the cut.
According to a report from Chad Simmons of Rivals, the Tigers are now competing against CFP contenders Georgia and Indiana, along with SEC rivals South Carolina and LSU, for Jones' commitment. It's a high-stakes race for a player who could anchor a secondary for years to come.
The Rivals Recruiting Prediction Machine shows this is shaping up to be a tight race, with South Carolina holding a slight edge at 36.4%. Auburn sits at 18.5%, while Clemson—surprisingly omitted from Jones' top five—checks in at 21% in the forecast. Jones told Simmons that his relationship with Auburn co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach Tim Banks has been a key factor. That bond actually began when Banks recruited Jones during his tenure at Tennessee, giving the Tigers an inside track.
Ranked as the No. 11 safety in the 2027 cycle by Rivals' Industry Ranking and the No. 7 overall prospect in South Carolina, Jones is set to kick off his official visit tour this weekend with Indiana. He'll also visit Clemson and Georgia before making his way to the Plains on June 5. For Auburn fans, that June date could be a pivotal moment in landing one of the nation's top young defenders.
