Nick Kurtz is making history at the plate—without even swinging the bat. The Athletics' 23-year-old first baseman matched a legendary mark held by Barry Bonds on Friday night, drawing a walk in his 20th consecutive game.

That seventh-inning free pass against the Cleveland Guardians tied Bonds for the second-longest streak in MLB history. Only Roy Cullenbine of the 1947 Detroit Tigers stands ahead, having walked in 22 straight games nearly 80 years ago.

Kurtz, the 2025 AL Rookie of the Year, burst onto the scene last season with 36 home runs in just 117 games. This year, he's showing a different kind of growth. While his batting average sits at .245 with five homers and 15 RBI entering Friday's 8-5 loss, his on-base percentage has climbed to .424—a remarkable 41-point jump from his rookie campaign.

The patience paid off in dramatic fashion. Facing reliever Hunter Gaddis, Kurtz fouled off a slider, watched three pitches miss the zone, took a called strike, and finally worked a 94-mph fastball outside. The walk set a franchise record and etched his name alongside baseball royalty.

Brent Rooker followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 8-5, but the Athletics couldn't complete the comeback. Still, for a team building around young talent, Kurtz's plate discipline is a promising sign. The slugger who once crushed fastballs is now mastering the art of the take—and it's paying off in historic fashion.
