Aston Villa have decided against making Douglas Luiz's loan move permanent this summer, leaving Juventus with a major transfer dilemma. The Brazilian midfielder, who joined Villa on a temporary deal with a purchase option, has now been rejected by two clubs in the same season and has barely seen the pitch since March.

According to reports from CalcioMercato, Unai Emery's side brought Luiz in primarily as emergency cover during injury or suspension crises. His last start came on March 19 in the Europa League against Lille—nearly two months ago. With Villa now heading to another European final, the 26-year-old finds himself surplus to requirements once again.

This situation is uncomfortably reminiscent of the Arthur Melo saga that haunted Juventus for years. Luiz is on a contract running until 2029 with a hefty salary, yet he has proven nearly impossible to move on permanently. Like Arthur before him, he continues to drain club resources without contributing on the pitch.

Juventus originally signed Luiz from Aston Villa in the summer of 2024 for €50 million plus €1.5 million in additional costs. What followed was a near-total failure. In his only season in Turin, he managed just six starts, accumulating 877 minutes without a single goal or assist.

Last summer, Juve shipped him to Nottingham Forest on a conditional loan that would have triggered an obligation to buy if he made 15 appearances of at least 45 minutes. He fell just short of that threshold with 14 appearances. The move to Villa in January was a last roll of the dice—and it hasn't worked either.

With years remaining on his contract and no suitors willing to commit to a permanent deal, Juventus now face an uncomfortable choice: absorb him back into the squad or accept a significant financial loss to move him on this summer. For a player once valued at over €50 million, it's a stark reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in modern football.
