The Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart will kick off without its biggest star. World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has officially withdrawn from the WTA 500 clay-court event, citing an unspecified injury sustained after her triumphant Miami Open run in late March.
In a social media announcement, Sabalenka expressed her disappointment: "I'm very sad to say that I won't be able to play... I always love coming back to Stuttgart. The atmosphere, the fans, and the support I feel there are so special." She added that despite her best efforts to recover, she is not ready to compete, closing with well-wishes for the tournament.
This marks the third tournament Sabalenka has skipped this season, but it's the first directly attributed to a physical injury. Earlier, she withdrew from the mandatory WTA 1000 events in Qatar and Dubai following her runner-up finish at the Australian Open, accepting the associated ranking and financial penalties.
Sabalenka's 2025 season has otherwise been dominant, winning the three tournaments she entered outside of Melbourne. Her withdrawal highlights the intense physical toll of the modern WTA schedule, a topic she addressed after winning Brisbane in January. "The season is definitely insane," Sabalenka noted, pointing to the heavy load and frequent injuries on tour. "Even though the results were really consistent, some of the tournaments I had been playing completely sick or really exhausted from overplaying."
Her absence opens the field in Stuttgart, shifting the spotlight onto other contenders as the European clay-court season gains momentum.
