Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta addressed the media ahead of Monday's Premier League clash against Burnley at the Emirates Stadium (kick-off 20:00 BST), sharing updates on player fitness, tactical adjustments, and the team's mindset after their narrow 1-0 victory over West Ham.
The Gunners are riding a wave of confidence, with Arteta emphasizing that the squad is "living in the moment" and that the players' emotions are "in a really good state." He noted that the "energy level is right" and there's a palpable sense of "enthusiasm and positivity" as they head into the final two league matches of the season.
On the injury front, Arteta provided cautious optimism regarding defender Riccardo Calafiori, who was forced off at halftime in the last match with a muscle issue. "We still have a few days ahead of us. Hopefully it is nothing serious, but we'll have to wait and see how he reacts," Arteta said.
Jurrien Timber, battling a recurring ankle injury, is making progress. The manager confirmed the defender is "feeling better" and has "progressed a little bit" this week. "He is doing everything he possibly can to help the team in any capacity," Arteta added. "There is a chance he could play — I cannot tell you how big the chance is." The club is working to get Timber "fit and available as quick as possible" given he is "such an important player."
However, the news was less encouraging for Ben White. When asked if the injured defender would miss the World Cup, Arteta replied: "It looks like a long-term injury so, at the moment, the focus is on when we will get him back available for Arsenal. That isn't going to happen for many, many weeks."
With White sidelined, Arteta faces a right-back conundrum and confirmed the team will need to "look at alternatives" going into the final run-in. But the manager remains unfazed, drawing on the squad's resilience: "We have experienced this all over the pitch this season. When we've had other issues, they've normally been in the same positions as well. Each time, we have managed to find the right level of performance and consistency, so I'm sure we can do it."
Youngster Cristhian Mosquera could be "an option" in the defensive line, but Arteta is keen on being "flexible" and "open to not only one but two or three options" to solve the right-back puzzle. As Arsenal gear up for the final stretch, it's all about adaptability and staying in the moment — a philosophy that's served them well so far.
