Mikel Arteta was left "fuming" after a controversial VAR decision denied Arsenal a second penalty in their 1-1 Champions League semi-final first-leg draw against Atletico Madrid at the Metropolitano Stadium.
The Gunners took the lead through a Viktor Gyokeres penalty, only for Julian Alvarez to level the scores from the spot after Ben White was penalized for handball. But the real drama came when Eberechi Eze appeared to be fouled in the box, earning Arsenal a penalty that was later overturned by VAR.
Arteta, speaking after the match, praised his team's performance but couldn't hide his frustration with the officiating. "What a privilege to play a Champions League semi-final in this stadium—the energy, the atmosphere was incredible," he said. "We controlled large parts of the game and went ahead with the penalty. But in the second half, we started sloppily, gave away momentum, and that's when they capitalized."
The Arsenal boss then turned his ire toward the VAR decision. "I'm incredibly fuming with how the penalty on Ebs was overturned. It wasn't a clear and obvious error—this changes the course of the game. At this level, I'm sorry, but this cannot happen."
Arteta also addressed the handball decision against White, acknowledging the difference in rules between competitions. "In the Premier League, that's not a penalty. But here, I have to accept it based on how consistently it's been applied, like with Bayern Munich yesterday."
With the tie finely poised ahead of the second leg, Arsenal will need to channel their frustration into a strong performance at the Emirates. For fans looking to gear up for the decisive clash, our collection of Champions League-inspired apparel has everything you need to show your support.
