Arsenal fans will have to wait a little longer to see two of their key players back in action, as Mikel Arteta has confirmed that both Kai Havertz and Jurrien Timber will miss this weekend's Premier League showdown against Fulham at the Emirates Stadium.
The injury news comes as a blow for the Gunners, who have been navigating a challenging season. Havertz, who picked up what appeared to be a groin injury during the first half of last week's hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle United, hasn't recovered in time for Saturday's clash. Meanwhile, Timber has been sidelined with a similar issue since mid-March, leaving Arsenal's depth tested once again.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Arteta didn't sugarcoat the situation. "Kai and Jurrien are out," he stated. "Let's see how everyone is tomorrow morning. Obviously, we haven't been able to train much, but tomorrow we will have the final update."
There is some positive news, though: captain Martin Odegaard is expected to be available, providing a much-needed boost in midfield.
Havertz's campaign has been particularly frustrating. The German international has been plagued by injuries, missing six months after hurting his knee on the opening day of the season against Manchester United. He's managed just nine Premier League appearances this term, a far cry from the impact Arsenal hoped for when he signed a five-year contract in 2023.
"It's been a huge miss," Arteta admitted. "We are talking about one of the most important attacking players that we have, and he has been out for seven or eight months in total. He hasn't been the only one, unfortunately, regarding players that we have missed through injury. We have shown an incredible capacity to overcome these scenarios and be very, very competitive."
With Havertz's contract still having over two years left, talk of a new deal has surfaced, but Arteta quickly shut down those discussions for now. "The focus is on availability and performance, and Kai is desperate to get on the pitch as quickly as possible. He cannot for this game, but hopefully he is available for Atletico. This is not the time to be having these discussions now."
As Arsenal look to maintain their competitive edge, the squad's resilience will be key. For fans, the hope is that Havertz and Timber can return soon, adding firepower and stability to a team that's already shown it can rise to the challenge.
