Lyon 3-1 Arsenal (agg 4-3): The Gunners led 2-1 following the first leg but their title defence was ended at the semi-final stage after an impressive performance from the French side

Arsenal's Women's Champions League title defense came to a heartbreaking end as Lyon staged a stunning second-leg comeback, winning 3-1 at the Groupama Stadium to seal a 4-3 aggregate victory and book their place in the final.

The Gunners entered the match with a slender 2-1 advantage from the first leg in London, but the French side came out firing from the opening whistle. Lyon nearly struck inside two minutes, with Ada Hegerberg unable to connect cleanly on a dangerous cross from Kadidiatou Diani. Arsenal had their own early chance when Kim Little's effort from a corner was blocked, but the warning signs were clear.

Lyon thought they had broken through in the seventh minute when Lindsey Heaps headed home from a Selma Bacha corner, but the goal was correctly ruled out for offside against Ingrid Engen, who was obstructing goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar. The reprieve was short-lived, however.

The breakthrough came in the 21st minute from the penalty spot after Lotte Wubben-Moy tripped Melchie Dumornay. Captain Wendie Renard stepped up, but her initial effort was saved by Van Domselaar. However, replays showed the goalkeeper had moved off her line, and Renard kept her composure to slot home the retaken penalty.

Lyon doubled their lead nine minutes before halftime through a moment of brilliance from Diani, who volleyed home from a tight angle following a Jule Brand corner. The goal sent the home crowd into a frenzy and put Arsenal on the back foot.

The Gunners showed their fighting spirit after the break. A clever free-kick released Alessia Russo, but she fired wide. Stina Blackstenius rattled the woodwork from distance, though play had already been stopped. Olivia Smith then poked past Christiane Endler, only to see her effort rebound off the post.

Arsenal's persistence paid off 15 minutes from time when Russo turned in a Smilla Holmberg cross to level the match on the night and restore hope. But the defending champions could not hold on.

Brand snatched victory for Lyon four minutes from time, controlling a Dumornay cross and clipping past Van Domselaar. A lengthy VAR check for offside followed, but the goal stood, confirming a deserved win for the French side.

For Arsenal, it's a bitter end to their European campaign, but the fight they showed in the second half proves this team has the heart to compete at the highest level. As they turn their attention to domestic duties, the Gunners will look to build on this experience and come back stronger next season.
