Arsenal are reportedly preparing a dramatic contract U-turn for long-serving defender Katie McCabe, who had seemed destined to leave the club on a free transfer this summer.
The 30-year-old Ireland captain is out of contract at the end of the season, and for months it appeared her decade-long spell in north London was drawing to a close, with Manchester City emerging as front-runners for her signature. However, according to Telegraph Sport, the Gunners are now likely to make McCabe an offer to stay—despite an ongoing squad refresh that has focused on lowering the team's age profile.
McCabe herself acknowledged the uncertainty back in March, confirming interest from elsewhere: "I'm into my last six months, so technically you're allowed to speak to others. I've left those to my agent, but there has been interest. The Arsenal fans know how committed I am to them and to the club. I think I've shown that over the last 10 years. I've given absolutely everything."
But her form and versatility have since strengthened her case. McCabe has filled in at centre-back this season while remaining one of Europe's most effective left-backs, and her influence during Arsenal's strong run since the start of the year has not gone unnoticed by key figures at the club.
McCabe joined Arsenal from Shelbourne in December 2015, turning down interest from Glasgow City, Chelsea, and Manchester City. Her early years at the club were challenging, with limited opportunities and a temporary loan back to Scotland. But under Joe Montemurro, she was converted into a world-class left-back—and now, with all options still on the table, she may yet extend her legacy at the Emirates.
