Blues ‘deserved more than that’ after controversial goal seals win for Gunners

In a match that will be remembered more for its controversy than its quality, Everton Women fell to a heartbreaking 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the Women's Super League, leaving manager Scott Phelan fuming at the officials.

The decisive moment came deep into injury time when Stina Blackstenius headed home from a corner, but the goal was shrouded in controversy. Everton goalkeeper Courtney Brosnan appeared to be clearly fouled by Leah Williamson, who was also in an offside position when the header was scored. Replays showed that the corner itself should never have been awarded, with a foul on Brosnan occurring before the ball even went out of play.

"Really disappointed and frustrated for the girls because their level of commitment and application against a high-level team has not been reflected in their rewards at the end," Phelan said after the match. "We've watched it back, there are three incidents in two corners where the referee could have intervened. That just adds to the level of disappointment I feel for the girls."

Despite the contentious finish, Everton produced a disciplined and determined display that frustrated their title-chasing hosts for the majority of the match. Manager Scott Phelan deployed Maz Pacheco in an advanced role on the left flank, while Katja Snoeijs made her first start since mid-January, giving the Blues a more attacking shape than they've shown in recent weeks.

Arsenal started brightly, with Alessia Russo forcing an early save and Beth Mead rattling the crossbar after meeting Emily Fox's lofted ball in the 16th minute. But Everton held firm, with the outstanding Martina Fernandez leading a resolute defensive effort that repeatedly snuffed out danger. The visitors also showed attacking ambition, with Clare Wheeler almost replicating Yuka Momiki's sublime chip against Chelsea when she intercepted Lotte Wubben-Moy's stray pass and attempted an audacious lob.

The result leaves Everton in the bottom half of the table, but Phelan's side can take heart from a performance that proved they can compete with the WSL's elite. With a disciplined defensive structure and growing attacking threat, the Blues look well-equipped to climb the standings in the weeks ahead.
