Liverpool's Champions League campaign came to a painful end on Wednesday, not just on the scoreboard but in the medical room. Manager Arne Slot delivered a grim update on striker Hugo Ekitike, who was stretchered off during the 2-0 second-leg defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

"It looks really bad," Slot stated post-match, his concern palpable. While the exact severity of the injury is still to be determined, the boss admitted he'd "be surprised" if Ekitike plays again this season. The loss of the French forward is a significant blow to Liverpool's attacking options for the final stretch of the Premier League season.

The injury woes didn't stop there. Defender Joe Gomez, who had come on as a substitute, was himself withdrawn in the second half. Slot clarified this was a precautionary move, initiated by the player. "He said to me he's not convinced that if he keeps sprinting... it's better to go off not to take the risk," Slot explained, highlighting the challenging in-game decisions managers face.

This 2-0 loss sealed a 4-0 aggregate exit at the hands of PSG, marking the second consecutive year the French giants have ended Liverpool's European dreams. The result, compounded by the fresh injury concerns, casts a shadow over Anfield as the team regroups to focus on domestic duties.
