Army football wrapped up its spring practice slate with an encouraging performance, as the Black Knights took the field at historic Michie Stadium for the annual Black/Gold scrimmage. On a perfect Friday evening, the team provided fans with a final glimpse of the 2024 squad before the summer hiatus, showcasing progress and potential.
The Black squad, featuring many projected starters, secured a 13-3 victory over the Gold team. The scoring was highlighted by a 4-yard touchdown run from Fenway Bowl hero Godspower Nwawuihe and a pair of field goals from kicker Dawson Jones.
For a program built on discipline and the ground game, the offensive execution was a positive sign. The touchdown drive, a nine-play, 78-yard march led by incumbent quarterback Cale Hellums, demonstrated the crisp, physical football that defines Army's identity. "I thought that was a well put-together drive," Hellums said post-scrimmage. "I thought GP played amazing."
Nwawuihe, who transitioned from quarterback to running back last season, led all rushers with 28 yards on eight carries. His progress is a key storyline, as depth in the backfield is crucial for the triple-option attack. "This spring definitely helped me get more comfortable in the position," Nwawuihe noted, emphasizing the trust built with his coaches and teammates.
Head coach Jeff Monken, entering his 13th season at West Point, acknowledged the dual nature of any spring game. "I thought our guys played hard and there were a lot of good things," Monken said, "but obviously some glaring mistakes that we'll have to get corrected." This balance of optimism and focus on improvement is the hallmark of a successful spring session.
As the Black Knights break until fall camp, the scrimmage served as a promising checkpoint. The team displayed the toughness and cohesion that fans expect, building momentum for the challenges of the upcoming season. For supporters, it was a rewarding evening of football under the lights, a fitting send-off for a hard-working squad.
