Armagh selector Conleith Gilligan feels his players are "cute enough" not to underestimate Tyrone in Sunday's Ulster Senior Football Championship preliminary round clash at the Athletic Grounds.

The Ulster Senior Football Championship kicks off this Sunday with a blockbuster preliminary round clash as Armagh hosts Tyrone at the Athletic Grounds. While the Orchard men enter as strong favorites, selector Conleith Gilligan is adamant his squad is far too savvy to take their rivals lightly.

"The players are cute enough not to underestimate Tyrone," Gilligan stated, emphasizing that past lessons have been learned. He pointed to last year's surprise defeat to Kerry as a prime example of how expectations can be upended, a sting the veteran players haven't forgotten.

Despite Armagh securing their Division One status while Tyrone remained in Division Two, Gilligan sees a dangerous opponent. He believes the Red Hands, who struggled for consistency under Malachy O'Rourke in the league, will view this local derby as the perfect opportunity to ignite their summer campaign. "Going to Armagh to do that would be high on their list of priorities," he noted.

The proximity of the counties means there's deep familiarity and respect. Gilligan highlighted that even Armagh's younger players are well aware of the talent in Tyrone, having watched them succeed at underage levels like the Hogan Cup and All-Ireland U20 championships.

On the injury front, Armagh faces the typical early-season dilemma. Key players like Joe McElroy, Andrew Murnin, and Barry McCambridge are nearing full fitness, but with the condensed schedule offering little recovery time, a final call on their availability will be a game-time decision. Rushing a player back risks a season-ending injury, a high-stakes calculation for the first teams out in the provincial championship.

Reflecting on the league, Gilligan acknowledged Armagh may have left some wins on the table, with their largest defeat being by just four points. He suspects Tyrone holds a similar view of their own campaign and, with key figures potentially returning, presents a completely different challenge come Sunday. This one is set to be a fierce and tactical battle from the first whistle.
