Arizona women’s basketball: Two transfers head to SEC

Tanyuel Welch and Daniah Trammell have announced their next stops

The final chapter has closed on the Arizona women's basketball team's 2024-25 roster, and two key contributors are heading to the SEC. On Friday evening, guard Tanyuel Welch and forward Daniah Trammell announced their next destinations, marking the end of an era for the Wildcats and the beginning of new journeys in the nation's toughest conference.

Welch will suit up for Missouri, while Trammell is heading to Arkansas. Both players will find themselves within six hours of their hometowns—a welcome homecoming after their time in Tucson.

Welch, a native of Indianapolis, arrived at Arizona last season after three years at Memphis. A knee injury forced her to redshirt one of those seasons, leaving her with two years of eligibility. She'll spend her final collegiate season in Columbia, Missouri, just about 5.5 hours from home.

From the moment she stepped on the practice court, Welch impressed coaches and teammates with her relentless motor. However, earning a spot in the starting lineup took time. She appeared in 28 of Arizona's 30 games, starting 19 of them, but her role was anything but consistent early on.

After playing in the Wildcats' first exhibition game on Oct. 23, Welch disappeared from the rotation until logging just three minutes in their second regular-season game against UC Irvine. The following week, she exploded onto the scene. Against Grambling, she posted 12 points, 8 rebounds, 1 block, and 1 steal in 20 minutes, shooting an efficient 62.5% from the field. She followed that up with 10 points on 50% shooting against NAU, adding 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 block in 29 minutes.

Her first start came on Dec. 15 against Chicago State, and she never looked back. Welch started in 19 of her final 20 appearances, establishing herself as a critical piece of the lineup. She averaged 8.7 points per game on 46.5% shooting, doing most of her damage inside the arc where she connected on 50% of her 2-point attempts. However, after being a reliable 3-point shooter at Memphis, that part of her game struggled at Arizona.

Welch led the team with 5.2 rebounds per game, showcasing her toughness on the boards. She also averaged 1.2 assists against 1.5 turnovers, a ratio she'll look to improve in the SEC.

For Welch and Trammell, the move to the SEC represents a new challenge and a chance to compete against the best in the country. As the Wildcats turn the page, these two transfers are ready to write their next chapter.
