In a move that marks the end of a remarkable chapter for Appleton North basketball, head coach Chris Kellett has announced he's stepping down after leading the Lightning to their most historic season ever. Kellett, who took the program from the depths of a winless campaign to its first Fox Valley Association title and inaugural WIAA state tournament appearance, shared the news on social media May 11, citing a desire to prioritize family time.

"This decision to step away was not made because of a lack of appreciation or love for Appleton North," Kellett wrote. "This program, the players, and this community mean a great deal to me. However, the time away from my family has taken a toll, and I feel it is important for me to be more present and invest in helping develop my own children. That priority has ultimately guided my decision."

When Kellett took the reins, Appleton North was at rock bottom—winless the previous season and managing just eight wins over the prior four years. Fast forward to this past season, and the Lightning exploded onto the scene with a stellar 24-5 record, sharing the FVA crown with Kaukauna at 16-2. Their Cinderella run culminated in a trip to the Kohl Center, where they battled eventual Division 1 state champion Wisconsin Lutheran before falling 68-61 in the semifinals.

"Through determination, grit, and an unwavering commitment to one another, we transformed the program into a competitive force in the FVA," Kellett reflected. "Together, we achieved milestones never before reached in North basketball – earning our first conference title and making our first trip to state. These accomplishments were no accident; they were the result of a group of young men who demanded the best of themselves and embraced the work required to succeed. I am incredibly proud of everything we achieved together."

Kellett, who was named FVA Coach of the Year for his efforts, expressed deep gratitude to everyone who made the magical season possible—from the players who bought into the vision to the coaching staff and supportive families. As the Lightning prepare for a new era, Kellett's legacy of resilience and transformation will undoubtedly inspire the next chapter of Appleton North basketball.
