The Appleton area sports scene was buzzing on Friday, May 15, with high school athletes delivering standout performances across baseball, softball, soccer, track and field, golf, and tennis. Here's a recap of the day's top action, perfect for fueling your team spirit.

Baseball: Dominant Performances and Comeback Thrillers

Kimberly's Papermakers put on an offensive clinic, routing Appleton West 13-0. The game was defined by a massive 12-run fourth inning that broke it wide open. While Kimberly only managed five hits, they capitalized on seven Appleton West errors and six walks. Beckett Hermus was the star, launching a home run and driving in six RBIs. Lex Knaebe also contributed with two RBIs. On the mound, Braeden Hermes threw a complete-game five-inning shutout, striking out eight while allowing just four hits and two walks.

In Hortonville, the Polar Bears' pitching duo of Elijah Yeager and Thomas Berrens held Appleton North to just three hits in a Fox Valley Association victory. Yeager worked 4⅓ innings, allowing only one unearned run, while Berrens closed the door with 2⅔ innings of one-run ball. Appleton North's Owen Reuland took the loss, but Matthew Hietpas provided solid relief.

St. Mary Catholic built a 7-4 lead and then held off a late rally to beat the Zephyrs. Luke Fairweather, Caleb Vogel, Jacob Ernsting, and Andrew Ernsting each collected two hits, with Caleb Springborn driving in two runs. Carter Nicholson took the loss in relief for St. Mary Catholic.

Brillion's offense exploded for 15 hits in a commanding win over the Panthers. Joe Shimek led the way with three hits, while Hayden Cousin, Kelvin Gilbertson, Chase Braun, Grady Paulow, McCormick Zutz, and Aiden Reinke each added two. Gilbertson drove in four runs and also earned the win on the mound, striking out six over five innings.

In a nonconference thriller, Oconto scored four runs in the ninth inning to edge out the Blue Devils. Kale Wagner paced the Tigers with three hits, setting the stage for the dramatic finish.
