Former Florida Gators quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. is at a pivotal moment in his NFL career, but on May 14, he took a meaningful step back in time. Returning to Citizens Field in Gainesville, Richardson was honored with the retirement of his high school jersey number—a tribute that celebrated the foundation of his football journey.

Eastside High retired Richardson's No. 2 jersey during halftime of its spring game on Thursday night. Before the ceremony, the young quarterback generously posed for photos and signed autographs for fans, reflecting on the memories that flooded back with each visit to the field. "Every time I come back, I think about scoring touchdowns, getting tackled, throwing touchdowns, and even throwing interceptions," Richardson said. "It doesn't feel real that they just retired my jersey. But I'm so thankful and grateful. I appreciate it, and I'm just trying to work and keep putting on for the city."

Richardson's high school career was nothing short of impressive. He led Eastside to city and district titles during his sophomore and junior years, earning a spot as one of the Gainesville Sun's top 10 area football players of all time. "When I played in Gainesville, I didn't necessarily think about trying to be top 10 in anything," Richardson admitted. "I was just trying to put on for my team, put on for my city, and try to win games. God blessed me enough to give me the recognition that I did, and I'm just thankful for it."

The ceremony came at a time of uncertainty for Richardson, who was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. After a standout college career at Florida, his professional journey has been marked by flashes of brilliance and growing pains, making this hometown honor a poignant reminder of his roots. As he navigates the next chapter of his career, Richardson's return to Citizens Field served as both a celebration of past achievements and a rallying cry for what lies ahead.
