On Mother's Day, Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards delivered a performance fueled by more than just athletic ambition—it was personal. The 24-year-old guard dropped 36 points in a decisive win over the San Antonio Spurs, but his motivation ran deeper than the scoreboard.

"Today is Mother's Day, so I just wanted to win for my mom, and it was just that simple," Edwards told reporters after the game. When asked if his late mother, Yvette, was on his mind throughout the day, he didn't hesitate: "For sure, I couldn't lose this game for her, for sure."

Edwards lost his mother to cancer in January 2015 when he was just 14 years old. Just seven months later, his grandmother Shirley also passed away from the disease. In the span of a single year, the teenager lost the two most supportive women in his life, leaving him under the care of his older brother Antoine and sister Antoinette.

"All our life the most supportive and loving people we had was our mom and grandmother," Edwards shared in a 2020 ESPN profile. "For them both to end up passing, it was just like a strike to the heart. It turns your heart cold. You don't have the support you once had. You don't have the love that you once had. So am I going to ever find that again?"

Rather than letting grief define him, Edwards channeled it into his game. "That just made me go harder because I know they would want to see me at the top," he told 247Sports in January 2020. It's a sentiment that has clearly paid off—the Timberwolves star has become one of the NBA's most electrifying young talents.

When Edwards was drafted in 2020, he made sure his mother and grandmother were part of the moment. Sitting beside paintings of both women as he waited for his name to be called, he told SEC Network, "As you can see my grandmother's right here and my mother's right here."

On Sunday, with the entire league watching, Anthony Edwards proved that love—and loss—can be the ultimate game-changer.
