Even though Charlisse Leger-Walker wasn't invited to the WNBA Draft on Monday, Angela Dugalic made sure Leger-Walker would have a spot.

The bond forged by the UCLA Bruins women's basketball team during their historic 37-1, national championship-winning season was on full display at the 2026 WNBA Draft, extending from the court to a heartfelt gesture of teamwork.

While five of the six drafted Bruins received official invitations to the event in New York City, standout guard Charlisse Leger-Walker was not on the WNBA's initial guest list. In a move that epitomizes team culture, forward Angela Dugalic ensured her teammate wouldn't miss the moment. Dugalic, who was invited, sacrificed two of her own family seats at her draft table so that Leger-Walker and her mother could experience the night in person.

The gesture proved especially meaningful as the draft unfolded. After a record-breaking first round that saw five Bruins selected—including Dugalic herself by the Washington Mystics—Leger-Walker heard her name called with the 18th overall pick by the Connecticut Sun. This made her the first player ever from New Zealand to be drafted into the WNBA, a milestone she got to celebrate live from the draft floor thanks to her teammate's selflessness.

While the core of the legendary UCLA squad will now scatter across the league as opponents—with Dugalic joining Lauren Betts in Washington and Leger-Walker teaming up with Gianna Kneepkens in Connecticut—the legacy of their championship culture is clear. It's a powerful reminder that the foundations of great teams are built on moments of support and sacrifice, long before the final buzzer sounds.
