The Lakers weren't supposed to win their playoff series against the Rockets. After LeBron James' Herculean effort, they face formidable Oklahoma City.

The Los Angeles Lakers weren't supposed to be here. After entering the playoffs as the underdog against the Houston Rockets, LeBron James delivered a performance for the ages—a Herculean effort that carried his shorthanded squad to a six-game series victory. Now, the Lakers face an even steeper climb: a conference semifinal showdown with the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder, starting Tuesday.

This matchup carries extra weight. The last time the Lakers visited Oklahoma City, the season took a devastating turn. Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves both suffered regular-season-ending injuries, sending the team into a three-game tailspin just one month before the playoffs. But where many saw disaster, Lakers coach JJ Redick saw a chance to forge something stronger.

"I had no doubt in my mind that we could get the group back and build the belief and confidence—and be able to execute and give ourselves an opportunity to win a playoff series," Redick said. "And then go take on the world champions and be competitive in that."

The Thunder, meanwhile, have lived up to every bit of their championship billing. They were the only team to sweep their first-round series, dismantling the Phoenix Suns with ruthless efficiency. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been unstoppable, averaging 33.8 points on 55.1% shooting along with eight assists per game. The Thunder did play two games without All-NBA wing Jalen Williams, who suffered a Grade 1 left hamstring strain in Game 2 and is listed as week-to-week.

For the Lakers, the biggest question mark remains Luka Doncic. His Grade 2 left hamstring strain will likely keep him out for at least the start of the series, putting even more pressure on LeBron and the supporting cast.

How the Teams Stack Up (based on regular-season statistics):

Los Angeles Lakers
Record: 53-29
Offensive Rating: 117.0 (10th in NBA)
Defensive Rating: 115.5 (20th)
Net Rating: 1.5 (14th)

Oklahoma City Thunder
Record: 64-18
Offensive Rating: 117.6 (7th)
Defensive Rating: 106.5 (1st)
Net Rating: 11.1 (1st)

Note: Net Rating subtracts defensive rating from offensive rating for a projected margin of victory.

Key Players to Watch

For the Lakers, it all starts with LeBron James (20.9 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 7.2 apg) and Austin Reaves (23.6 ppg, 4.7 rpg). But the supporting cast—from Rui Hachimura to Jarred Vanderbilt—will need to step up in Doncic's absence.

For the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander leads a deep, disciplined squad that finished with the league's best defensive rating. If Williams returns healthy, Oklahoma City's offensive firepower only grows more dangerous.

This series pits resilience against dominance, experience against youth. One thing is certain: after their first-round upset, the Lakers won't go down without a fight.
