For the second year in a row, the American Heritage-Delray girls lacrosse team found themselves in a familiar, painful position: fighting for a state championship and coming up just short in the final minutes.
In a Class 1A state title rematch that felt almost like déjà vu, the Stallions fell to Lake Highland Prep 6-5 in a heart-wrenching finish at Naples. The loss mirrored last year's defeat to the same Highlanders, leaving the Heritage faithful stunned once again.
The Stallions showed incredible grit in the fourth quarter, mounting a furious three-goal rally to erase a 5-2 deficit. Senior standout Ava Drew capped the comeback with a clutch goal inside six minutes remaining, knotting the game at 5-5 and sending hope surging through the Heritage sideline.
With the crowd holding their breath, the Stallions had possession and momentum. A go-ahead score seemed inevitable. But Lake Highland Prep had other plans.
The Highlanders methodically drained the clock in the final two minutes, then delivered the dagger — a go-ahead goal from Giselle Jasciewicz with just 20 seconds left on the clock. Heritage's comeback bid fell agonizingly short.
The game started promisingly enough, with Heritage's Madison Vargas striking first. But Lake Highland's Jasciewicz and Katherine D'Avanzo answered quickly, and a buzzer-beating goal with 0.8 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Highlanders a 3-1 lead.
Hali Horvath cut the deficit to one before halftime, but the third quarter proved frustrating as Heritage struggled to solve Highlanders goalkeeper Sinthya Quiroz. Down 5-2 entering the fourth, the Stallions showed their championship mettle with a three-goal rally — only to see the sixth goal remain tantalizingly out of reach.
The Stallions will graduate nine seniors, many of whom are headed to Division I programs. Their legacy of resilience and heart will not be forgotten, even as this title dream slips away in the final seconds once more.
