May 6—Nine Alle-Kiski Valley softball teams will find out their WPIAL playoff fates when the softball committee releases the brackets with first-round matchups, dates, sites and times Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. It's been a regular season filled with exhilarating wins and heartbreaking setbacks, but now the focus turns to the postseason journey with the opening games slated to begin as early ...

The WPIAL playoff brackets are set to drop Thursday at 4 p.m., and nine Alle-Kiski Valley softball teams will finally learn their postseason paths. After a rollercoaster regular season full of dramatic wins and tough losses, attention now shifts to the road ahead, with first-round games starting as early as Monday.

Several teams are making long-awaited returns to the playoffs. Kiski Area, Freeport, and Burrell are all back after missing out last season, with the Cavaliers ending a three-year drought dating back to 2022. Meanwhile, Fox Chapel and Plum finished in a tie for second place in Section 1-5A at 8-4, trailing only undefeated Shaler.

Knoch has been a model of consistency, securing back-to-back section titles. Led by a veteran squad with strong defense, reliable pitching, and power at the plate, the Knights have gone 39-5 in section play over the past four seasons.

Deer Lakes, Apollo-Ridge, and Leechburg are also extending their postseason streaks. The Lancers made a run to the Class 3A quarterfinals last year with a dominant 7-0 first-round win over Charleroi before falling to top-seeded South Park, who went on to finish as WPIAL runners-up and earn a state berth. Apollo-Ridge had a similar fate, edging OLSH in the 8-9 matchup before running into a Neshannock team that would eventually win the WPIAL championship.

Perhaps the most remarkable streak belongs to Leechburg. Despite a 2-9 overall record, the Blue Devils finished fourth in Section 3-1A at 2-6, securing their 39th consecutive trip to the WPIAL playoffs—one of the longest active streaks in league history.

Freeport's path to the postseason was anything but smooth. The Yellowjackets endured a tense final three weeks, losing three one-run section games—one to section runner-up Indiana and two to playoff-bound Derry. They also saw a 5-1 lead slip away against Greensburg Salem on April 15, falling 7-5. But Freeport bounced back in a big way Monday, crushing Greensburg Salem 13-0 behind a nine-hit attack and eight walks drawn. Pitcher Allie Smith was stellar, tossing a two-hitter with strong defensive support.

That set up a must-watch scenario Tuesday: Freeport needed Derry to beat Greensburg Salem to secure a playoff spot. The Trojans delivered in a big way, jumping out early and rolling to a 19-5 win. The result created a tie for fourth place in the section at 5-7 between Freeport and Greensburg Salem, with both teams advancing based on their series split.
