Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski has weighed in on the post-fight chatter following UFC 327, and he doesn't believe Jiri Prochazka has a strong case for an immediate rematch against new light heavyweight king Carlos Ulberg.
The dramatic title fight saw Prochazka claim he showed "mercy" after noticing Ulberg had injured his leg, only to be knocked out moments later by a devastating left hook. Now, Prochazka is calling for a second chance, but Volkanovski, known for his sharp fight analysis, isn't convinced the UFC will grant it.
"Nah, that's not going to happen," Volkanovski stated on his YouTube channel. "I like Jiri, but it doesn't work like that. The optics are tough: Ulberg fought with a busted leg and still got the knockout. How do you convince the UFC to run it back based on those circumstances? They'll look at it and say, 'He tore his ACL and still finished you.'"
Volkanovski broke down the fight's critical moments, suggesting the dynamic was challenging for Prochazka even before the injury. He praised Ulberg's composure under pressure, noting that the New Zealander seemed comfortable standing in the pocket and was effectively implementing his game plan.
"Early on, I thought Carlos looked great," Volkanovski explained. "He was smashing kicks and working his game. Jiri had to be very cautious. Even with the injury, it was always looking like a tough fight for him. You could see Jiri was in two minds—maybe he pulled back a bit, but he was also trying to capitalize by attacking the compromised leg."
In the volatile world of UFC title pictures, immediate rematches are typically reserved for long-reigning champions or exceptionally close contests. Volkanovski's assessment implies that, despite Prochazka's warrior spirit and previous accomplishments, the decisive nature of Ulberg's victory—especially while injured—likely moves the division forward with a new champion at the helm.
