Alabama’s AHSAA reveals schedule for 2026 high school football state championships

Mark your calendars, Alabama high school football fans! The road to the 2026 state championships now has a map and a new destination. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has unveiled the official schedule, confirming a major shift for the pinnacle of the prep season.

In a significant move, the championship scene is heading south. After years in Birmingham, the title games will be contested at Hancock-Whitney Stadium in Mobile for the 2026 season, promising a fresh atmosphere for teams and fans alike. This change coincides with the expansion from seven to eight championship games, meaning the event formerly known as the "Super 7" will be getting a new name to match its new format.

AHSAA Executive Director Heath Harmon expressed optimism about the new schedule, noting, "I think it’s going to be a great week. The way we’ve got the games scheduled I think it’s going to be something people are going to enjoy." The schedule is designed to provide adequate rest for teams, particularly for flag and private school playoffs leading into the championship week.

The action kicks off with a full day dedicated to the growing sport of flag football. On Thursday, December 10, 2026, champions will be crowned across four divisions:

• 10 a.m.: Classes A-AA Flag Football Championship
• 1 p.m.: Classes 1A-4A Flag Football Championship
• 4 p.m.: Class 5A Flag Football Championship
• 7 p.m.: Class 6A Flag Football Championship

This announcement was part of a broader set of changes approved by the AHSAA, including the introduction of a shot clock for all basketball classes and a mercy rule for hoops. It all sets the stage for an exciting future for Alabama high school athletics, where new traditions will be forged on the field in Mobile.
