AI video reveals whether Oilers' game-ending goal vs. Ducks actually crossed the line fully originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
The Edmonton Oilers lost to the Anaheim Ducks on a goal that may have crossed the line by millimeters.
It was called fully across the line, and replay review couldn't overturn it. It won the OT contest for the Ducks to give them a 3-1 series lead over the Oilers.
Because of camera angles and goalie positioning, there wasn't actually an angle that showed the entirety of the puck across the goal line. The trailing portion of the puck was never fully visible.
That made it tough for people to come to grips with the fact that it did, 100%, cross the line.
There also wasn't a view that said it didn't, though, which is why the goal stood as called.
It generally gave off the movement shape of a puck that just crossed the line, but an artificial intelligence video circulating social media does seem to confirm that:
Did some AI puck-tracking on that controversial Oilers/Ducks call. As an Oilers fan it pains me to say it, but the math doesn't lie — it's a goal. By 3 pixels. @Sportsnetpic.twitter.com/fZRPrkZCWR

This post doesn't share exactly what its prompt was, but it does appear to be the same footage shown on the broadcast, just with the additional calculations and graphics ongoing.
It certainly does add up with what it looked like on the screen, and it seems to reach a definitive conclusion.
Oilers fans still likely won't be happy with it, but it's long since been decided, and all Edmonton can do now is try to pull off a big rally in the series.
