Big changes are coming to the Alabama high school sports landscape. The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) has finalized new championship pathways for fall, winter, and spring sports, a direct result of the historic decision to split public and private schools for postseason play.
This shift, approved back in January, fundamentally alters the playoff journey for every team. The recent Central Board of Control meeting on April 15th put these plans into motion, setting the stage for a new competitive era beginning with the next reclassification period.
The most dramatic restructuring is visible in flag football. Previously a two-classification sport for 2025, it will explode into five classifications for the 2026 season to accommodate the public-private split. The new Class 6A will mirror the structure of tackle football, featuring four regions where the top six teams qualify for a five-round playoff, with the top two seeds earning a coveted first-round bye.
For the inaugural private school flag football championship in 2026, Private A and AA will combine into a single bracket. With four regions between them, the top two teams from each will advance, creating an eight-team, three-round tournament to crown the first private school champion.
Volleyball is also seeing a strategic tweak to its playoff path. For the 2026 season, Classes 1A through 5A will introduce a sub-regional game. However, in Class 6A and the Private classifications (A and AA), the format changes: area winners and runners-up will advance directly to two super-regional tournaments. From there, the top four finishers in the 1A-6A and Private A super regionals will punch their tickets to the state championship tournament.
These changes promise to redefine the road to glory for thousands of student-athletes across Alabama, ensuring every game carries even greater weight as teams navigate these new competitive frontiers.
