Jo Adell put on a power display with two solo home runs, leading the Los Angeles Angels to a 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday and avoiding a three-game sweep at Rogers Centre.
José Soriano was the story on the mound, striking out seven over 7 2/3 innings to snap a three-start winless streak. The right-hander allowed just two hits and a walk in the first inning—including Kazuma Okamoto's RBI double—but then retired 20 consecutive batters before Myles Straw reached on an infield single in the eighth. Sam Bachman came on after back-to-back singles loaded the bases and induced a groundout from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to escape the jam.
Oswald Peraza added a two-run homer in the fifth inning as Los Angeles ended an eight-game road losing streak dating to April 16, while also snapping a nine-game skid in Toronto. Adell went deep again in the sixth and ninth innings, with all three home runs coming off Blue Jays starter Eric Lauer (1-5), who allowed six runs and five hits over five innings. Lauer hasn't won since March 29 against the Athletics.
For the Blue Jays, right fielder Addison Barger was scratched from the lineup due to a sore right shoulder. Barger had just returned Saturday after missing 29 games with a sore left ankle and made a highlight-reel 101.2 mph throw to retire Jorge Soler at home plate.
Up next, the Angels send left-hander Joey Cantilo (2-1, 3.43 ERA) to the mound Monday to open a series against the Cleveland Guardians. The Blue Jays will counter with right-hander Kevin Gausman (2-2, 3.09 ERA) against the Tampa Bay Rays' Drew Rasmussen (2-1, 2.95).
