The WPIAL softball playoffs are heating up, and Monday's Class 4A first-round matchup between No. 11 Freeport and No. 6 Laurel Highlands promises plenty of excitement. The game is set for 2 p.m. at Norwin, with the winner advancing to face No. 3 Blackhawk (10-4) in Thursday's quarterfinals—time and location still to be determined.
Freeport (8-10) is making a strong return to the postseason after missing the playoffs last year in its first season back in Class 4A. The Yellowjackets locked up a share of first place in Section 1 with Greensburg-Salem, finishing tied at 5-7. A key moment came last Monday when they dominated Greensburg-Salem, powered by junior pitcher Ali Smith's two-hit gem. Freshman Mady Bell has also stepped up in the circle this season.
On offense, Freeport leans on a trio of senior leaders: third baseman Addyson Caruso, a Waynesburg commit; center fielder Addi Gourley, headed to Pitt-Johnstown; and first baseman Lauren Clark. Caruso's experience and clutch hitting will be crucial against a tough Laurel Highlands squad.
Laurel Highlands (10-5) enters the playoffs for the first time since 2013, finishing second in Section 2 behind top-seeded Elizabeth Forward. The Mustangs are hungry for their first WPIAL title, and senior Kayla Howell leads the charge with a .408 batting average, 20 hits, and a team-best 16 runs scored. Sophomores Payton Senge and Chloe Komacko, along with senior Harlie Dirda, provide the power with 16, 12, and 10 RBIs, respectively.
In the circle, Senge (9-4) has been dominant, posting a 0.88 ERA and an eye-popping 146 strikeouts over 80 innings. Her ability to shut down Freeport's lineup will be key for Laurel Highlands to advance.
This matchup pits two determined teams with different paths: Freeport's resilient return to the playoffs versus Laurel Highlands' long-awaited breakthrough. Expect a hard-fought battle as both squads aim to keep their championship dreams alive.
