A.J. Ewing didn't just make his MLB debut on Tuesday night—he announced his arrival with authority. The 21-year-old Mets rookie reached base four times, scored twice, and drove in two runs, sparking a much-needed 10-2 victory over the Tigers at Citi Field. For a team that had scored just five runs in its previous series and entered the game with a league-worst 15-25 record, Ewing's performance was nothing short of a jolt.
It's been a dizzying climb for Ewing. Just two weeks after making his Triple-A debut in Syracuse and 39 days after opening the season in Binghamton, he was suddenly in the big leagues, fielding questions from a dozen reporters in the Mets clubhouse. But if the moment felt overwhelming, Ewing didn't show it. "I'm confident in my ability," he said with a sheepish smile before the game. "I'm just gonna play the same game I've been playing."
That game is built on speed, energy, and an uncanny knack for getting on base. Last season, Ewing stole 70 bases across three levels—fifth-most in all of minor league baseball. At 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds, he's a spark plug, exactly what a struggling Mets offense needed. In 30 games between Double-A and Triple-A this season, he had reached base at a staggering 44.7% clip.
"He's a pretty well-rounded player right now," said Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns. "There aren't a whole lot of holes in his game, and he can contribute to us at a variety of different levels." Stearns also praised Ewing's maturity, noting, "He's a pretty mature kid for a young player." But he added a note of caution: "That doesn't mean this is going to go flawlessly for him."
Flawless? Not quite. But close. In his debut, Ewing started in center field and batted eighth. Each time he stepped to the plate, the crowd of 36,382 rose to their feet, sensing something special. He drew three walks, scored twice, drove in two runs, and helped ignite an offense that had been stuck in neutral. For a Mets team desperate for a spark, Ewing provided exactly that—and maybe a glimpse of a brighter future.
