The Vanderbilt Commodores have wrapped up spring practice, but the biggest question in Nashville remains unanswered: who will be the starting quarterback? This is just the opening chapter in head coach Clark Lea's deliberate process to find a successor for the departed Diego Pavia.
The plot thickened dramatically last November when five-star phenom Jared Curtis, one of the nation's top recruits, made a stunning flip. He decommitted from powerhouse Georgia to stay home and play for Vanderbilt, instantly becoming the fan favorite to win the job.
However, Coach Lea is in no rush to anoint a starter. The competition is wide open, featuring not just the highly-touted freshman, but also a seasoned veteran familiar with the system. Senior Blaze Berlowitz, junior Whit Muschamp, and sophomore Jack Elliott are all very much in the mix, with each having their standout moments this spring.
"This is going to be a process of elimination," Lea stated, emphasizing that the true decision will unfold over summer workouts and fall camp before the September 5th opener against Austin Peay.
While the excitement around Jared Curtis is palpable, Lea is committed to giving the talented freshman the time he needs to develop. "I’ve got a true freshman that is learning how to play in college," Lea said. "We all see the tools and the skills, and we believe in that... we’re going to give him as much time as possible to learn the system and to really be able to compete."
This patient approach is wise given the overall lack of college starting experience in the quarterback room. This is where Blaze Berlowitz presents a compelling case. The 6-foot-3 senior has the most live-game experience in Vanderbilt's offense, appearing in six games last season. More importantly, he possesses invaluable system knowledge.
Berlowitz began his career at New Mexico State in 2023, working directly under offensive coordinator Tim Beck. He followed Beck, Coach Jerry Kill, Diego Pavia, and others to Vanderbilt this offseason, giving him a significant head start in understanding the playbook. "Blaze Berlowitz has shown up in live segments and has proven he can move the offense," Lea praised. "He’s got experience in the system. He’s looked really good."
Berlowitz also had the benefit of learning from the dynamic Diego Pavia for the past three seasons. "Learning from him was huge for me," Berlowitz noted earlier this month, highlighting the mentorship that could prove crucial in this battle.
As the Black and Gold spring game concludes, Vanderbilt's quarterback saga is far from over. It's a classic training camp storyline featuring a blue-chip freshman, a system-savvy veteran, and a coach determined to let the competition play out. For Commodores fans, the wait for a new field general continues.
