Players from Horseheads, Elmira, Corning, Maine-Endwell, Johnson City, Norwich named all-state in girls basketball for 2025-26 season.

The hardwood has been kind to Section 4 this season, with nine standout players from large-school programs earning well-deserved all-state honors from the New York State Sports Writers Association for the 2025-26 girls basketball campaign.

Leading the charge is the Horseheads trio that powered the Blue Raiders to the Class AA state semifinals. Freshman point guard Samantha Bonnell made an immediate impact, landing on the fifth team—a remarkable achievement for a first-year player. Junior guard Maddie Ribble earned a spot on the 12th team, while sophomore Giana Hughey received honorable mention. Together, they helped Horseheads capture Section 4 and regional titles before falling to eventual state champion North Tonawanda in the final four. Head coach Andy Scott, who notched his 400th career win in the regional final, noted this marks the first time in his tenure that three players from his squad have been recognized in the all-state process—a testament to the program's rising profile.

In Class AAA, Corning's junior forward Charlise Starns earned a spot on the third team after leading the Hawks to a Section 4 championship. Elmira's Mariah Matias, also a junior forward, became a three-time all-state selection with her fourth-team nod, showcasing consistency and leadership on the court.

Norwich's Joey Ryan, a junior, stood out in Class A as Section 4's highest-ranked large-school pick, earning second-team honors. Ryan's all-around game helped keep Norwich competitive throughout the season.

Beyond these nine selections, another nine players from the section received honorable mention. All-state teams for classes B, C, and D are set to be announced at a later date, so more local talent may soon join the list.

The all-state teams are compiled based on nominations from correspondents across New York, with Albertus Magnus senior Julia Scott taking home Player of the Year honors in Class AA. For fans of Section 4 basketball, this recognition highlights the depth and rising star power in the region—and with young players like Bonnell and Hughey already making waves, the future looks bright.
