Cody Gakpo has issued a rallying cry to his Liverpool teammates as the Reds push to secure Champions League football for next season. With just three games remaining in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign, Liverpool sit fourth in the table and need only four more points to guarantee their spot among Europe's elite. But despite the favorable position, the Dutch forward insists there's no room for complacency.
"The most important thing now is to get the Champions League qualification over the line, to win our own games," Gakpo told Liverpoolfc.com. "Depending on other teams' results, we could secure it this weekend. But we need to get it done sooner rather than later."
The message comes after a mixed run of form that included a hard-fought 3-2 defeat to Manchester United, which served as a reminder of the fine margins in top-flight football. While Liverpool have won three of their last four matches, Gakpo is quick to point out that the club's storied history demands more.
"Looking at the season as a whole, this period has been quite positive. But we all know the standards that have been set at this club – it has to be better in general," he added.
Next up for Liverpool is a home clash against Chelsea at Anfield, a fixture that on paper looks favorable given the Blues' recent struggles. Chelsea are mired in a six-match losing streak, most recently falling 3-1 to Nottingham Forest. But Gakpo warns against reading too much into their opponents' form.
"Chelsea are in a tough place right now, but eventually, their situation will turn around. Hopefully, it won't be against us," Gakpo cautioned. "They have a strong team with great players, so we must never underestimate them, no matter their current form. It's always a tough game when they come to Anfield. We have to be ready."
The forward also took a moment to reflect on a personal milestone, having recently scored his 50th goal for the club. For a player who arrived at Anfield with high expectations, Gakpo's focus remains firmly on team success rather than individual accolades. As Liverpool gear up for a crucial stretch, his leadership and determination could be exactly what the Reds need to cross the finish line.
