Jamie Carragher has never been one to hold back his opinions, and this time he's aimed his honest assessment at a former Liverpool teammate. The Reds legend firmly believes Jordan Henderson "made a big mistake" by leaving Anfield when he did.

Back in July 2023, Henderson made the controversial move to Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. It was a decision that divided fans, with many feeling he was risking his legacy. The midfielder's time in the Middle East was short-lived, though. Just six months later, he joined Ajax, and then returned to England last year with Brentford.

Now, Henderson is set to face his old club on the final day of the Premier League season this May. But according to Carragher, the 34-year-old should never have left Liverpool in the first place.

"When I retired and Steven Gerrard left, everyone was asking who would be captain," Carragher recalled on the Zac Djellab podcast. "Liverpool fans were going nuts about Henderson being captain. I was defending him constantly. He was a brilliant captain, a great lad, and a brilliant player for Liverpool."

The Sky Sports pundit didn't mince words about Henderson's departure. "I still don't think he should have left Liverpool. He should still be there now. He made a big mistake. He missed out on another league title."

Henderson's exit came after Jurgen Klopp brought in new midfield talent, including Wataru Endo, and told the veteran he wouldn't be playing every week. For Carragher, that wasn't a good enough reason to walk away from the club where he'd spent 12 years and lifted every major trophy.

Now at Brentford, Henderson is still playing in the Premier League, but Carragher believes he could have stayed at Anfield and been part of Arne Slot's title-winning squad. Instead, he missed the chance for a proper send-off—the kind reserved for long-serving legends.

It's a reminder that in football, timing is everything. For Henderson, the grass wasn't greener, and Carragher thinks he knows exactly where his former teammate belongs.
