The wheels have officially come off at RC Strasbourg Alsace, and manager Gary O'Neil isn't holding back about who's to blame. After a promising season that saw the club chasing European qualification through cup competitions, Strasbourg's hopes have crumbled in spectacular fashion.

O'Neil had acknowledged the risk of pinning their European dreams on knockout tournaments, but the gamble has backfired badly. A heartbreaking defeat to OGC Nice in the Coupe de France semi-finals was followed by a midweek UEFA Europa Conference League exit at the hands of Rayo Vallecano—the same Spanish side now set to face Crystal Palace in the final later this month.

There was still a glimmer of hope: a seventh-place finish in Ligue 1 could have secured a Conference League spot if RC Lens beat Nice in the cup final. Strasbourg's final-day showdown against AS Monaco kept that dream alive, but only if they took care of business against SCO Angers first.

They didn't. A disappointing 1-1 draw has made European qualification mathematically impossible for next season. And in the aftermath, O'Neil didn't mince words.

"I am angry; I hope the players are too," said the former Bournemouth and Wolves boss. "There are two matches left, and they have to show me they have the level to play with us next season. But we won't get anywhere playing like that. They really disappointed me—even more so than on Thursday against Rayo Vallecano. They have to do better. The world of football is full of sharks, and they need to know that. I told them we were playing a final, and they didn't play like it."

O'Neil then turned his frustration toward the club's winter transfer business. "We have to work hard this summer to be better. We've already held meetings about recruitment. I need two centre-forwards. The owners want to give me the means to perform next season, but we have to improve the culture, the quality of the players, and the depth of the squad. We messed up in the January transfer window. We weakened instead of improving the squad."

For Strasbourg fans, the message is clear: this season's collapse isn't just about bad luck—it's about decisions made off the pitch that left the squad short when it mattered most. With a summer rebuild on the horizon, O'Neil is demanding more from everyone involved.
