Liverpool's ownership, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), is reportedly standing firm behind manager Arne Slot, even as the Reds endure a rocky season and whispers of a potential Xabi Alonso return grow louder.

According to respected journalist James Pearce, speaking in a recent Q&A for The Athletic, FSG's current stance is clear: they're backing Slot. This comes despite mounting pressure from critics, including former Liverpool players questioning whether the Dutchman is the right fit for Anfield. The speculation has only intensified since Alonso's surprising dismissal from Real Madrid in January, fueling rumors that the beloved ex-midfielder could make a comeback—this time as a coach.

Addressing a fan's query about Alonso being the "perfect fit" to replace Slot, Pearce explained: "Right now, everything points to FSG sticking with Slot. If that changes, Alonso would certainly be a strong candidate. But there's a misconception that he was Liverpool's first choice after Klopp left. The truth is, Alonso had already decided to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for another season, so he wasn't seriously considered. Slot consistently topped the data-driven metrics FSG used to find Klopp's successor."

Pearce also highlighted that while Alonso shares a deep bond with Liverpool and its supporters, his coaching resume doesn't yet match the pedigree of Jurgen Klopp when he took over in 2015—a move widely hailed as a "no-brainer" and a "massive coup" for the club.

For now, it seems FSG is betting on Slot to turn things around, even as the Alonso narrative continues to captivate fans. Whether that faith pays off remains to be seen, but one thing's for sure: this summer could be a defining moment for Liverpool both on and off the pitch.
