The Philadelphia 76ers have reportedly parted ways with President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey after six seasons, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. The decision came after a Tuesday evening meeting between Morey and 76ers owners Josh Harris and David Blitzer in Philadelphia.
Morey arrived in Philadelphia with sky-high expectations after a successful tenure with the Houston Rockets. He was viewed as the final piece that could transform the 76ers from a competitive team into a true championship contender. With Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons playing at near-MVP levels, the hope was that Morey's analytics-driven approach and sharp decision-making would push the team over the top.
And while the 76ers certainly won plenty of games under Morey's watch, that elusive championship never came. Premature playoff exits became a frustrating pattern, particularly under former head coach Doc Rivers. The situation with Simmons soured quickly, but Morey managed to turn that into a positive by trading the disgruntled guard for James Harden.
That blockbuster move paid immediate dividends, helping the 76ers win 54 games during the 2022-23 season. But once again, the postseason brought heartbreak with another early exit. The following season saw things take a turn for the worse. Harden wasn't retained, and the team slipped from the No. 3 seed to the No. 7 seed in the 2023-24 playoffs. Embiid was limited to just 39 games, and the chemistry issues that had been bubbling under the surface finally boiled over.
Interestingly, while Morey is out, head coach Nick Nurse will reportedly keep his job. Taking the reins on an interim basis is Bob Myers—yes, the same Bob Myers who built the Golden State Warriors dynasty. Now serving as President of Sports for the 76ers' parent company, Myers will step in as interim GM and lead the search for Morey's permanent replacement.
For Philadelphia fans, this feels like another chapter in a story that's become all too familiar: talent, expectations, and ultimately, disappointment. The search for that championship formula continues.
